When my daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia at age seven, my very first question was WHY? What causes cancer? Why is there so much of it? Below are some of the answers I found.
Like all animal protein, milk acidifies the body pH, which in turn triggers a biological correction. You see, calcium is an excellent acid neutralizer and the biggest storage of calcium in the body is – you guessed it… in the bones. So the very same calcium that our bones need to stay strong is utilized to neutralize the acidifying effect of milk and acidic foods. Look at the Acid/Alkaline chart below to get an idea which foods are acid and which alkaline.
Milk and milk products are acid, causing the blood to become to high in acid. Acid = inflammation which then leads to aches and pains. The goal is to become more alkaline equaling better health less inflammation and less pain.
To fix the pH calcium is automatically pulled from your bones. This fix works very fast. Once the calcium is pulled out of the bones, it leaves the body via the urine, so that the surprising net result after this is an actual calcium deficit. And so the cycle goes daily or continually depending upon a person’s daily diet.
Knowing this, you’ll understand why statistics show that countries with the lowest consumption of dairy products also have the lowest fracture incidence in their population. “Consumption of dairy products, particularly at age 20 years, was associated with an increased risk of hip fracture in old age. (“Case-Control Study of Risk Factors for Hip Fractures in the Elderly”. American Journal of Epidemiology. Vol. 139, No. 5, 1994).
The 12 year long Harvard Nurses’ Health Study found that those who consumed the most calcium from dairy foods broke more bones than those who rarely drank milk. This is a broad study based on 77,761 women aged 34 through 59 years of age.
“Dairy contains some very allergenic proteins, such as casein, which can be problematic for many people. And to make matters worse, the casein that’s in our modern dairy—sourced from modern, hybridized cows—has been genetically altered, creating a much higher likelihood of inflammation, autoimmune disease, and even type 1 diabetes. With this in mind, I strongly recommend that you limit the amount of cow-sourced dairy that you consume.
This leads to another frequent question I receive: “Is organic dairy OK?” Organic cows are often milked while pregnant, producing milk that’s full of hormones. In fact, the average glass of milk has 60 different hormones in it. [Emphasis added.] These are anabolic hormones, which means they help you to grow. But not all growth is good. You don’t want to grow cancer cells. You don’t want to grow big bellies. You don’t want to grow in ways that actually may be harmful.”  Dr. Mark Hyman
Many people have heard me say, “Casein [80% of the proteins in cow’s milk is Casein.] is the most relevant chemical carcinogen ever identified.” Guilty as charged. Many times I’ve said this. For the sake of this discussion, let’s call it a hypothesis, that is, “Casein causes cancer”. T. Colin Campbell, PhD
Casein is a chemical carcinogen
Some chemicals in our environment qualify as carcinogens. That is, they cause cancer, based on testing them in experimental animal studies according to criteria set forth by our government.
In our experiments over 25+ years, and published extensively, we showed that casein (milk protein) increased experimental cancer at levels within the range of human experience (that is the green box) — with no need to estimate low level response in humans, from high level response in rats — and we know also how it works! This suggested casein (and likely most other animal proteins) is a far more relevant carcinogen than any pesticide, herbicide, food additive or other noxious chemical ever tested. What would you conclude?” 
Not everyone can stomach dairy. About 75 percent of the world’s population is genetically unable to properly digest milk and other dairy products — a problem called lactose intolerance. Dr. Mark Hyman
More research is needed, but scientific studies have shown that many autistic kids improve dramatically when put on a diet free of dairy foods. One study of 20 children found a major reduction in autistic behavior in kids who were put on a casein-free diet (casein is a component of cow’s milk). And another study done by researchers at the University of Rome showed a “marked improvement” in the behavior of autistic children who were taken off dairy products. 
Simple Steps Toward Health
Every time you shop, pick up a milk alternative to try. Our favorite is Coconut milk. Try several until you find one that you like. There are so many options such as Flax, Hemp, Coconut and Almond, to name a few.
When I decided to quit dairy I thought I would go through hell when in fact it was not as hard as I thought it would be. Butter was difficult but I learned it’s an acquired taste as well. My life-long migraines were cured after being off dairy for two months. I found this so unbelievable that I would cheat and have a dairy product which would inevitably cause an incredible headbanger of a headache the next day. After many such tests I finally accepted that dairy was not for me and my health improved greatly as a result.
For the first time we have so many alternatives available to us that the change over is much easier than you think. Coconut oil or spread can be used in place of butter. Start experimenting. Earth Balance Buttery Spread is also quite good and they have two different kinds.
Creamers are available in a coconut base or soy base with many different flavors. Please note, many doctors do not recommend soy, especially for men.
Ice cream milk alternatives include, Rice, Coconut, Soy and believe it or not tofu known under the name of Tofutti Ice Cream. Again my favorite for taste is Coconut or the Tofutti. Per a blind taste test I put my family through, they could not believe how good coconut ice cream tasted without any taste of coconut (for the ones who hate coconut). Most of these are available through Health Food Stores and some are carried at standard grocery stores.
Yogurt alternatives are Soy, Rice, and Coconut. Go to a health food store where they have the most variety. Pick one from each category to try. Honestly, none of these come close to real yogurt so I just stopped buying any yogurt at all. You also might want to consider the incredible amounts of sugar added to all packaged yogurts unless they are clearly labeled PLAIN. Yogurt along has the capability of packing added weight you don’t want and that is why I quit eating any kind of yogurt.
The only really good cheese alternative we have found is called Chao because it tastes good and does not contain casein, the milk protein known to cause cancer. (Please note that many dairy free alternative products do use casein, so read the fine print on any dairy free products you decide to buy.)
Once you have chosen your favorite milk alternatives drop all milk products for two months as suggested by T. Colin Campbell, PhD. When I followed his instructions I had some cravings for butter but all these were gone within 3 days. It was far less painful than I thought. Cooking was a bit of a trick at first until I learned that eggs come out better with coconut oil and vegetables are better with olive oil. After that I no longer needed butter to cook with anything. Now the taste of butter is not appealing at all.
Some of the stated benefits of quitting dairy.
❧ Weight loss.
❧ More energy, throughout the day. Apparently dairy is really hard to digest and saps your energy.
❧ Sinuses drained and cleared up, fewer headaches. It took six weeks for my sinuses to fully clear up!
❧ Acne goes away, skin totally clears up. A friend of mine had terrible acne and her dermatologist recommended she get off dairy products. Every person with skin problems that I told to quit dairy were quite surprised when their skin cleared up beautifully.
❧ Improved digestion.
❧ Increased stamina. I know, you find this hard to believe but it is completely true. You won’t believe it until you actually do it.
❧ Less aches and pains.
❧ Improved behavior in children.
❧ Deeper more restful sleep.
I dare you to find replacements for milk, butter, yogurt and cheese. Quit dairy for two months. Then have your favorite milk or cheese product. You will be shocked how your body reacts within 24 hours. You may have to repeat this as I did, several times before you realize milk or dairy is actually very bad for your health. And best of all, by removing it from your diet you are significantly lessening cancer risk.
