Earnest Giving Weekend

We left for Cape Coral around noon and arrived at the hotel about 2:20. Beautiful place, The Mariner Resort. That night was a basketball game at Earnest Graham’s high school. It was the Tampa Bay Bucks against some alumni and professional basketball players. Earnest played on the team representing his school. What fun this was. It surprised me to see good the football players were at basketball. Some were very good!

During half time Earnest was announcing various things to the auditorium and surprised us by having Kayla stand up as his special friend saying that she had just finished treatment. Kayla was beaming. P1020420

After the game they had sitters set up for the kids and any parents that wanted to, could go to a night club that was raising funds for Earnest Giving and 1voice Foundation, both of which are charities that have teamed up. Even though we were tired, I told my hubby, I don’t care how tired we are, we are going to the club for some fun. It has been YEARS since we have gone out in this way.

The club was great! We danced for a long time. For a short time I felt young again.

Something I have to tell you. The club was set up with a reserved area for the players, their friends and the cancer families. Part of the time Bill and I sat on a couch and watched all of the people around us. Interesting, watching the players get mauled by beautiful women who had hats, markers and cameras in their bags. I thought I would see players that were into the whole celebrity thing, having women faun over them asking them to sign things. It was the exact opposite. This poor player was doing his duty but you could see that it was not very fun for him at all. When I saw this, I took my camera and locked it in our car. All of the players that I met are simple, family type guys who are incredibly nice gentlemen.  P1020424

The next day we all had a brunch together and that is where Earnest presented Kayla with her trophy. What a coup, she had no idea it was coming and to have it given to her by Earnest was the best touch of all! Those two hit it off instantly. Kayla spent most of the morning with Earnest and met his daughter and two nieces. Kayla even got a ride with Earnest to the bowling contest. All of the players helped the kids bowl who were having a hard time. Such nice guys. We had a blast! This was the best way to have this event coincide with Kayla finishing treatment!
