Eating Crow

Well, two days ago. two of Kayla’s fingers swelled up and became very painful. We were using a prescription cream that had worked in the past and now, did nothing. I called her oncologist on Sunday about her fingers. He suggested we come in first thing in the morning, which we did. Kayla is now on a Prescription strength Lamisil taken orally, a broad spectrum anti-biotic and a probiotic. Of course the Probiotic is not covered by Insurance. Oh well.

I have been forced to give Kayla some Tylenol at night because she cannot sleep due to her thumb throbbing.

I have no idea of what I was thinking by using all of these natural remedies for her nail fungus. It actually got a bit insane, all of the things that we were doing to try and fix this alien life form on her fingers. It has gotten so bad that I do not even want to list out everything that we have been doing. I started to feel as if I was going to do some voodoo dance to try and get rid of this thing. My regret was the fact that I did not have any experience with fungus, Kayla had about three funky looking nails for many months. Being busy with all of the other stuff that we do, I neglected her nails until they suddenly got worse last February and spread to eight nails. Although we have done things religiously, every day, twice a day, since then, no lasting improvement has been attained. They would get better for days or a week and then get worse. This is why I feel as if we have been fooled for a while.

Hopefully the antibiotic will take the pain away in a couple of days. I have no idea how long it will take for the anti-fungal to work. We shall see, in the meantime Kayla does not want to go to school until the swelling goes down. She said she cannot hold a pencil in her hand. This is probably better because I can keep an eye on her while administering these new medications. The pharmacist warned that Kayla could have an allergic reaction because she is allergic to penicillin. Its a low possibility but one to watch for.

What a joke, I erroneously thought that we could get through treatment, then use alternatives that kill the fungus from the inside out. We could no longer wait as the nails warranted immediate medical intervention. I am a bit worried about her liver with these new medications, however, she will take the Milk Thistle and I will keep an eye out for any abdominal changes. This also could be because of her compromised immune system.  Maybe these alternatives would have worked for a normal person.

If I sound upset, excuse me because I am not. I’m just a bit angry with myself for being so stupid. Kayla is doing fine. It seems that the finger pain gets very noticeable when she lies down to go to sleep. That is all.

Yesterday, we were all in the car having a conversation about love. I said something like “Kayla and I love each other no matter what!” Bill says to Kayla, “Even when your mom gives you a hard time?” Here was the clincher in her reply. “Yeah, our love is the secret that keeps us together forever. That is why we will stay together as a family because we all love each other.” The way she said this was so touching and cute. We all had a good laugh.

I had to put this photo of Kayla having fun in our pool.  The doctor said it was okay for her to swim, yay, because we are now in full blown summer weather with the temperatures in the 90’s almost every day.  P1020354It is not all serious around here by any means.

Seven days from now is the last day of chemo…
