Flu Controversy

Sunday August 9th, 2009

When Kayla was first diagnosed with leukemia I was told that these cancer kids do not get immunized for anything while on treatment. This is due to the fact that their immune system is suppressed by the treatment itself.

You can imagine my shock when our doctor told me recently that they are thinking of immunizing all of the cancer kids with the H1N1 flu shot that will be coming out shortly.

One patient told me that she had received all of her immunizations but would have to redo all of them as she has a new immune system and this means her previous immunizations are null and void.

In doing some research on this subject I found a website that might be of interest to others trying to make sense of this. http://www.vaccinerights.com/ Per this and other sites, it looks very possible that there could be mandatory vaccinations required for H1N1. If you do not want to have to get this shot, then go to the site highlighted and look up your state and the laws governing this subject. It is under the resources page.

Apparently there is a race to produce this flu shot. There is no time to do the full clinical studies that are normally done. Go to article here http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/cndy/2009-07/24/content_8466835.htm

I do not know what I am going to do on this subject. There are many misgivings regarding flu shots. A friend of mine was enlisted and had to get immunizations before he was deployed. He got so sick! And this was a person with a normal immune system. This is what scares me. Kayla appears to be chemically sensitive, as she has had many reactions to drugs that most of the other kids do not get.

What I do know is that I am willing to go through major lengths to avoid any hospital stays. These, I feel can be pretty dangerous and per many articles, are a cesspool of infectious germs. With the resulting medications, one can run into any number of complications. These are what I am trying to avoid.

Here is another article, which states that you can get the flu shot without Thimrosal. This is the preservative that was linked to autism. http://www.wellsphere.com/children-s-health-article/flu-shot-or-not/457260

Apparently New Jersey has just made it mandatory for certain age groups to get the flu shot. Another site called lymphomation has information from the CDC on this subject. http://www.lymphomation.org/flushots.htm

This site – Kidney Friends, has quoted warnings for immune compromised patients and the efficacy of flu shots.

Here is the quote: The fact such people’s immune systems are impaired may mean giving them Tamiflu is a better option than the H1N1 vaccines being developed, according to American researchers in a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

“Although influenza vaccination is widely recommended for people that are immunosuppressed, the same immune dysfunction that can increase the risk and consequences of influenza infection might also compromise vaccine responses and effectiveness,” Ken Kunisaki of the University of Minnesota and Edward Janoff of Denver Veterans Affairs Medical Centre, write.

The authors recommend more research into how susceptible such patient groups are to H1N1 and to how effective future vaccines may be. The health secretary Andy Burnham insisted again that the first supplies of a vaccine would be received next month and would be safe.

Macmillan Cancer Support said it has seen an increase in calls and emails to its support services about the effects of swine flu on people with reduced immunity.

But Professor Steve Field, chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners, said: “People with these conditions should not be unduly concerned by this research paper, which is theoretical, because the evidence isn’t clear.”

Patients who are immuno-compromised should, however, avoid contact with people who may have swine flu and may even want to avoid crowds, he added.

Other than these mental trips and resulting research, all is well in our lives. Kayla appears to be getting stronger and stronger. Her bicep’s are very visible now and I love seeing her body developing muscles all over.

Meanwhile, the torture continues regarding this whole subject of immunizations…

Wednesday August 12th, 2008 Flu Conclusions

It has been a very busy couple of days here between the flu research, talking to Kayla’s school and everything else that I am doing.

We had a family meeting and went over all of the information found regarding swine flu. It was unanimous to forgo the new H1N1 flu shot and here is why:

Kayla is immune compromised and there is not enough information regarding the results of this shot for these types of patients.

Kayla is chemically sensitive and has had some very severe reactions to drugs, even when doctors have said that she would be fine.

Guillain-Barre reaction (GBS: temporary muscle weakness and/or paralysis) is a rare side effect that can produce permanent damage to the patient. Yikes!

The testing for this shot is being pushed through rapidly.

The shot will contain mercury, (aka Thimerosal) and only limited supplies of mercury free shots will be available.

I found a mask that looked pretty good and met all of the specifications that I was looking for. It was invented by a father trying to figure out how to protect his children from the SARS epidemic in Asia. At that time there was no mask on the market that met 100_6005the government guidelines and also fit children. Although the site makes it sound as if this mask is only for children, this mask will fit most patients of any age.

I purchased this mask and am glad to report that it is very comfortable and the airflow is much better than the masks that are currently on the market. It is also very affordable. For more information go to this link:

Back to our life

I am almost done with an article for the website on flu prevention. So far, Kayla has not had any sickness in five months. Our efforts are now focused on flu and sickness prevention. Kayla has agreed to wear her mask at all times if she is out in public places. As moral support I will wear one with her. She will also wear the mask at school all day. Although this is a complete drag she agrees that it is better to wear a mask than to get sick. KAYLA IS SUCH A TROOPER! I AM SO PROUD OF HER!
