Responsibility

Kayla is angry with me because we had a talk about responsibility. She does not want to accept that she is responsible for the prevention of spreading the fungus. I wish you could have seen her face when I went over this with her. She wants to blame me and then when I constantly remind her to get her hands out of her mouth she gets angry. I bluntly let her know that if the fungus spreads she is the one doing it, not me. Kayla was very shocked by this. It took some time with many different examples to get her to even look at the fact that she is the one that has to control herself, not me. I cannot watch her every second to try and stop the finger sucking.
Not only did Kayla seem to really think about our conversation but when we got the spurs put onto the back of her teeth she has completely stopped finger sucking. I have even checked on her in the middle of the night and she did not have her teeth in her mouth! I have NEVER seen her sleep with out fingers in her mouth.
I did quite a bit of research for products to cure her nail fungus. I purchased Nail Tek, which arrived today.
Now we are going through hoops to get her nails to heal. Here is our routine.
* One tablespoon of coconut oil in her protein shake every morning. Coconut reportedly has an ingredient that kills fungus.
* Probiotics, Acidophilus, Zeolite mineral doses doubled. (Zeolite is a natural mineral that is said to kill fungal growths.)
* No sugar consumption, little to no wheat consumed.
* Fingers soaked twice a day in water with five capfuls of white iodine, and crushed garlic. Fingers are then thoroughly dried, we apply Nail Tek anti-fungal liquid to each nail, wait until dry then apply Lamisil anti-fungal cream to the nail. The Nail Tek is painful when applied to angry raw skin. We use a blow dryer to help the pain and quicken dry time.

Kayla’s nails are starting to heal. In four days the pain has gone away on four of her nails. I am so excited about this. Finally a breakthrough. Most of the stuff on the net did not pan out for us at all. We tried the following: white vinegar soaks, anti-fungal creams, three different types, several oil based vitamins applied topically, low dose bleach in water, and who knows what else over the past six months. But this is what I did learn, if something works keep doing it religiously until the fungus is COMPLETELY GONE! This is why I purchased two bottles of the Nail Tek so that I would not run out if it did work. As an aside this product happened to be the most reasonable of the choices on the Net.
Other news, I have been working on getting Kayla’s individual education plan done. She finished all of the testing, now it is coordinating with all of the appropriate staff on the rest of the paperwork needed to get this rolling. This along with a 504 form will get Kayla the additional supports needed for school.
We finished getting lots of quotes for Kayla’s orthodontal work and it is pricey. My goal is to have her getting her teeth straightened by the end of this summer. All of the orthodontists were shocked that Kayla has all of her adult teeth in, including her 12 year molars, apparently this is very rare. Kayla started teething at three months of age, by the time she was a year old all of her teeth were in. Now with all of her adult teeth in, I do not know if this would have happened or if the steroids increased this speed of growth. The one good thing is that she can get her braces before the age of ten and be done by the time she is 12.
Life is good, Kayla does her eye exercises and hip stretches every day. Her reading is improving. Math is a daunting task because she has to memorize all of the addition and subtraction tables. Memorization for her is very difficult. She will learn something one day and it will be gone in the same day. All of her basic skills have to be taught to her hundreds of times. I am learning how to not get frustrated by this unending task of teaching things over and over. It’s hard.
Our garden is in. The work on that has been quite a bit but I decided I wanted to do it because we then avoid lots of pesticides in our food. I must have 30 potato plants growing, five cucumbers, four tomato plants, zucchini and Bell peppers. Once the seeds have grown it is not a lot of work. I check the plants every day, water as needed and fertilize every couple of weeks. The taste is incomparable to store bought. There is something about going out on your porch and picking a couple of tomatoes for your salad.
Next month I will get more seeds going so that we have new vegetable plants coming in succession. This way the food provided will continue until the winter. All of this is a challenge that I love! Especially when we eat it.
The whole economic scene is very disheartening. The main stream news is constantly saying that things are improving. Where? How? Every single person that I know is struggling. For the first time ever, a local store was completely sold out of vegetable seeds. I have been gardening for many years and I have never seen empty seed shelves. This was very telling of the current times that we are living in. In Florida, where we live, we see “going out of business” signs regularly. Many resturants have been closed, major chains have closed and these signs continue to increase.
I am so glad that Kayla is at the end of her treatment and God willing, will not have to have anymore ever. I say this because I cannot imagine what it is like for people who are unemployed who are diagnosed with a major disease like cancer.
